London’s Most-Crowded Borough Hosts 2012 Olympics

London’s Olympic Park is in the borough of Newham, which has the highest concentration of people per household in London, according to the Office for National Statistics’ 2011 census. For every 100 housing units in 2011, there were 301 people in Newham, compared with 199 in Kensington & Chelsea. Demand for inexpensive housing encouraged Newham landlords to rent living spaces in illegal “sheds with beds,” as the local government calls them. Officials are conducting raids in a crackdown on the substandard dwellings, many with improper or no sewage connections. Christine Lyons, the district’s chief of planning enforcement, says such housing is sending living standards back to the 19th century in London’s fastest growing borough.  Read the full story here.
