Outside Groups Influence Congressional Races

President Barack Obama, Mitt Romney and hundreds of congressional candidates will campaign full throttle following the party nominating conventions in the final push to Election Day on Nov. 6. For voters watching the campaigns unfold on their TVs, the election season has already been a long one. According to Kantar Media/CMAG data, almost 1 million local network television ads from candidates, their parties and prominent groups not affiliated with any campaign have aired across the U.S.

Outside groups, many of which also invest heavily in the presidential contest, have aired more than 100,000 ads for Senate and House races as of Aug. 27.
