The Meat Shop is an electronic commerce platform that facilitates a novel online cause in China, known as songfan, or meal delivery, that aids the families of dissidents. The website has raised more than 1 million yuan ($163,000) since it was started March 28 by Xu Zhirong, a popular blogger known as Meaty Monk. The shop has aided three families so far. It’s hosted on Taobao Marketplace, an online shopping community similar to EBay Inc. that has 500 million users.

Celebrities have donated to and helped promote the site. A Phoenix TV war correspondent gave a Ferragamo scarf and an antique clock. And movie star Chen Kun retweeted an auction for dinner with a Beijing scholar to his 40 million followers. Read the story >>
