Adam Hudson, a spokesman for the California Democrat, said she paid off the loans earlier this year, so the disclosure reports released a year from now will show her free and clear of law-school debt.

Reports released yesterday showed that the five-term Democrat ended 2011 owing more than $15,000 on the student loan she took out in 1992, before she headed off to UCLA law school.

She wasn’t alone. Republican Senator Marco Rubio of Florida reported owing more than $100,000 in loans incurred in 1996, the year he earned a law degree from the University of Miami. Four-term Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers of Washington state disclosed owing more than $10,000 on a student loan she took out in 2003. She earned an MBA from the University of Washington in 2002. Arizona Republican David Schweikert reporting owing more than $50,000 on loans he incurred in 2003, two years before he earned an MBA from Arizona State.
