Keeping secrets just got a whole lot harder for Mitt Romney.
The Republican presidential candidate got an early taste of what life in the White House would be like today, when a routine trip to the hardware store became a media event.
This morning marked the start of protective pool coverage for Romney, the media duty in which a small group of reporters follows the candidate everywhere. The set-up is similar to the type of press entourage that frequently travels with the president.
Cameras snapped away as Romney bought groceries and what he called “hardware stuff” in the picturesque downtown of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, where the candidate is spending the day at his lakeside vacation home.
He emerged from Hunters Shop ‘n Save carrying cases of Diet Coke, Wild Cherry Diet Pepsi and Poland Spring bottled water.
For a meeting, perhaps, with prospective vice presidential candidates?
That was one secret Romney intended to keep.
“I’ve got some folks coming over today,” he said with a laugh.
