Former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords stands on stage during the final day of the Democratic National Convention
The crowd inside the Time Warner Cable arena erupted when former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, severely wounded in a Jan. 8, 2011, shooting, came out at about 8 p.m. to lead the pledge of allegiance at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte.
Giffords, waving to the cheering crowd, was escorted by U.S. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida, the Democratic National Committee chairwoman and Giffords’ friend. She joined her in the singing.
Delegates started chanting, “Gabby, Gabby,” and then “Fired up, ready to go” as Giffords left the stage.
