House Speaker John Boehner says he isn’t going to be discouraged by “political handwringing by these Washington insiders.” They are “trying to make this race look like its over for the president, who’s going to win.”

With some polls showing President Barack Obama leading Romney by five to eight percentage points, Boehner put in a plug for the Gallup Poll’s daily tracking of the presidential race.

In addition to surveying the largest sample of the electorate, Gallup has the “most successful screen” of “who may vote and who may not vote,” Boehner said. “They’ve got this as a one-point race.”

The latest Gallup tracking, which came out just after Boehner spoke, shows the race dead even at 47-47 percent.

The Ohio Republican told reporters to “think about this as a card game. The president has played his cards. His economic policies have failed, his foreign policy has failed, his energy policy has failed. His cards are played… Mitt Romney has a plan to get our economy back on track.”
