David Tepper, the head of the hedge fund Appaloosa Management, was the top donor last month to a super-political action committee that will aid Republican candidates who support same-sex marriage.

Tepper gave $150,000 to American Unity PAC, which formed in June with help from Paul Singer, the founder of the New York hedge fund Elliott Management Corp. Singer, a prominent Republican donor, has given more than $1 million to his super-PAC.

Bloomberg News reported today that Tepper’s Appaloosa “”has positioned itself to benefit from a possible merger between bankrupt AMR Corp. and US Airways Group Inc. after taking stakes in both airlines, three people familiar with the matter said.” Read that story here.

American Unity PAC had $1.7 million in the bank at the end of August. Its mission “is to engage in federal elections to protect and promote inclusive Republicans,” according to its Web site.
