Bloomberg by the Numbers: $686 Million

That’s how much money outside groups told the Federal Election Commission they have spent to date on the 2012 elections, according to Sunlight Foundation, a Washington-based watchdog group. Most of that money — $548 million — has gone to tell voters why they shouldn’t support a particular candidate, rather than why they should. The figures include money spent by political parties and super-PACs that do disclose their donors, as well by as nonprofits that keep their contributors hidden.
