That’s the U.S. labor force participation rate for March, the lowest since May 1979, according to the Labor Department.

The rate represents the proportion of the population that’s in the civilian labor force, which includes those who are employed and those looking for work. The labor force declined by 496,000 last month, pushing down the unemployment rate to a four-year low of 7.6 percent from 7.7 percent.

Nonfarm payroll employment grew by 88,000 in March, the smallest gain in nine months, Bloomberg’s Alex Kowalski reported.
