House Majority Leader Eric Cantor and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo attended a glitzy party Saturday night at billionaire Ron Perelman’s estate in East Hampton, but it was former Secretary of State Colin Powell who took a starring a role, Amanda Gordon reports for Bloomberg Muse.
Coaxed by Jamie Foxx, Powell went onstage singing the chorus to Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” and proving himself a good dancer alongside Ellen DeGeneres and Katie Holmes.
The event, a benefit for the Apollo Theater in Harlem, offered a tableau of politicians, businessmen and celebrities intermingling. The theater’s chairman, Richard Parsons, is on President Barack Obama’s Council on Jobs.
Perelman, an Apollo Theater board member, has also used his estate to throw fundraisers for Republican presidential nominees Mitt Romney and John McCain. On Friday, he was a lead donor at a nearby fundraiser for the Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation. He didn’t attend that event, as he was observing Shabbat, according to Ashley Stachowski, a spokesman at MacAndrews & Forbes Holdings Inc., of which Perelman is chief executive and chairman.
The Apollo party Saturday night started after sundown. Also spotted there: Frances Townsend, a former homeland security adviser to President George W. Bush, now an executive at MacAndrews & Forbes Holdings Inc., and Cantor’s wife, Diana Cantor, who serves on the board of directors of the cosmetics company Revlon, which Perelman controls.
