“I guess Republicans are like cicadas.”
– Rep. Tom Cole, an Oklahoma Republican, on the apparent need of his party to rise every 17 years and shut down the federal government.
Cole, the only member of his state’s delegation who voted to reopen the government after the partial shutdown in October forced by a fight over the president’s health-care law, today called that tactic “silly” and “bad politics.”
In an interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Cole said his party is following a more prudent course now — rather than the “temper tantrum” of a government shutdown.
He says Republicans will do better focusing on the problems inherent in the Affordable Care Act and the Obama administration’s roll-out of the health-care insurance exchanges offering coverage to millions of Americans lacking it. The government, he says, has no business being in this market. The federal government, Cole says, is “not Amazon.”
