The Senate convened this morning without Majority Leader Harry Reid, who is in the hospital  for observation and will miss today’s session.

His spokesman, Adam Jentleson, said today that the Nevada Democrat, who turned 74 earlier this month, wasn’t feeling well this morning and went to the hospital “as a precaution.”

Tests showed everything was normal and Reid was “alert, resting and feeling better,” Jentleson said.

Even so, `he said, “doctors have asked that he remain in the hospital for observation.”

Reid was in “good spirits” today when he spoke by phone with Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer about appropriations, said Matt House, a spokesman for the New York senator.

Jim Rowley contributed to this report from the Capitol.
