On the last weekend day before Christmas, “Super Sunday” sales brought in more than $17 billion, according to retail consultant Craig Johnson.

That exceeds the $15 billion recorded on the day after Thanksgiving, known as Black Friday.

Many retailers kept their doors open nonstop through the weekend after opening them on Friday to attract shoppers looking for last-minute bargains.

Meanwhile, the Commerce Department reported a 0.5 percent increase in consumer spending last month, after a 0.4 percent boost in October.
