Alan Simpson has an idea of what it means to be a Republican:

Getting government out of the lives of Americans.

And that, according to the retired senator from Wyoming, includes the question of same-sex marriage.

The characteristically candid and outspoken Simpson — better known lately as one half of the Simpson-Bowles campaign to wrestle the nation’s deficit to the ground — stars in a Freedom to Marry ad getting widespread attention.

He speaks of his upbringing in Cody, Wyoming.

“I am a Republican,” Simpson says in the mountain-framed ad. “The party’s basic core is government out of your life and the right to be left alone.”

“Whether you’re gay or lesbian or straight, if you love someone and you want to marry them, marry them,” he says, showing one of the photos from his own wedding album. “I’ve had a wonderful married life. Why shouldn’t somebody else have the joy of marriage. Live and let live. It’s very simple.”
