General Electric Co. may pay more than $13 billion to acquire the French company Alstom SA.

Bloomberg News first reported the news yesterday. Here’s the story by Aaron Kirchfeld, Matthew Campbell and Jeffrey McCracken.

“GE had cash and equivalents of $88.6 billion as of Dec. 31, of which $57 billion was held outside of the U.S., the company said in a regulatory filing,” they wrote.

GE, based in Fairfield, Connecticut, is the world’s largest maker of jet engines and diesel locomotives.
