The National Association of Home Builders sentiment gauge rose to 49 this month from 45.

It’s the biggest jump in the index since last July, as Bloomberg’s Shobhana Chandra reports here.

“That long and harsh winter, which seemed to have extended a bit into the spring, is finally waning, and people are back out on the market, and builders are beginning to see more serious customers,” David Crowe, the NAHB’s chief economist, said on Bloomberg Radio.

Of the three sub-indices, the component that measures current sales conditions rose a “nice solid” six points to 54, Crowe said.
