Obama: ‘If France Can Figure This Out…’

“This isn’t rocket science,” President Barack Obama said today of the need to help working mothers with support that will enable them to keep working.

“There is only one developed country in the world that does not offer paid maternity leave and that is us and that it not a list you want to be on all by your lonesome,” the president said today at a White House Summit on Working Families at a Washington hotel.

“If France can figure this out, we can figure it out,” Obama said.

“There are other countries that know how to do child care well,” he said. “This isn’t rocket science.”

Of course, the president and first lady haven’t had any trouble with child care lately.

“We live above the story, so to speak,” he said of the first family. And, because daughters Sasha and Malia are older now, he said, “I never had to meet a world leader with Cheerios stuck to my pants. That has not happened.”
