Ex-Yahoo Director Calls Company’s Facebook Lawsuit ‘Pathetic’

Former Yahoo board member Eric Hippeau didn’t exactly like the lawsuit the company brought against Facebook over patent infringement yesterday.

Yahoo’s complaint in federal court asked for an order to bar Facebook from infringement on 10 patents — and for triple damages, according to the document. The complaint said the patents cover tasks that include social networking and messaging.

The suit comes as Yahoo struggles to keep pace with Facebook for user attention and online sales growth. Yahoo lost the top spot last year in display-based advertising in the U.S. to Facebook, according to EMarketer Inc.

Dana Lengkeek, a spokeswoman for Yahoo, declined to comment about the tweet.

Hippeau, who joined the board back in 1996, stepped down last year. He is a partner at Lerer Ventures, a seed-stage venture capital firm based in New York. Hippeau was formerly the chief executive of Huffington Post.
