Tech Entrepreneur to Start a Club Where Tech Talk Is Frowned Upon

Michael Birch earned a fortune in the technology industry. He co-founded Bebo, a once-popular social network in the U.K., and sold it to AOL for $850 million in 2008. And his early investments in Pinterest are looking like a smart bet.

Birch’s next project is to escape Silicon Valley’s intellectual bubble. For the last three years, he’s been planning a members-only club called the Battery, he told Bloomberg West. Located in San Francisco, the complex is expected to have as many as 1,200 members when it opens in May, no more than 400 of whom will have a background in tech, he said.

“Most of the events I go to in San Francisco are tech events,” Birch said in the interview. “It’s the same people, and you always talk about tech.”

The Battery won’t be Birch’s first bar. He has one in his house because “there’s really not many good pubs, English pubs, in San Francisco,” he said. Grab a pint, and watch the video for a peek inside.
