Machine Learning in Finance: Advances and Future Directions
Machine learning is changing our world at an accelerating pace. In this talk we will discuss the latest developments in machine learning research viewed through the lens of the finance industry. Methods for addressing the key issues arising in applications – explainability of machine learning models, nonstationarity, performance and efficiency – are advancing rapidly. We will review some of the recent advances in NLP, applications of neural networks and explainability and talk about the state of the art and applications finance. Finally, we will look at some possible future directions and conclude with a Q&A session.

Xavier Bettel
Education and qualifications
Following his secondary school studies, Xavier Bettel pursued a higher education at the University of Nancy, where he was awarded a master’s degree in public and European law from the Faculty of Law.
Governmental posts
Following the legislative elections of 20 October 2013, Xavier Bettel was appointed Prime Minister, Minister of State, Minister for Communications and Media and Minister for Religious Affairs on 4 December 2013 in the coalition government formed by the Democratic Party (DP), the Luxembourg Socialist Workers’ Party (LSAP) and the Green Party (déi gréng). Following the resignation of Maggy Nagel from the government, Xavier Bettel was appointed Minister of Culture on 18 December 2015.
After the legislative elections of 14 October 2018, Xavier Bettel was appointed Prime Minister, Minister of State, Minister for Communications and Media, Minister for Religious Affairs, Minister for Digitalisation and Minister for Administrative Reform on 5 December 2018 in the coalition government formed by the DP, the LSAP and déi gréng.
Other political posts
A member of the DP since 1989, at the age of 26, Xavier Bettel was elected to Parliament for the first time in 1999, as candidate for the DP in the constituency of the Centre. He was re-elected in 2004, 2009 and 2013. In Parliament, he assumed, among others, the role of vice-chairman of the Legal Affairs Committee from 2004 to 2013 and that of vice-chairman of the Committee of Inquiry into the State Intelligence Service from 2012 to 2013. From 2009 to 2011, he assumed the role of chairman of the DP parliamentary group.
At local level, Xavier Bettel initially served as a municipal councillor for the City of Luxembourg from 2000 to 2005, then as an alderman from 2005 to 2011. Following the municipal elections of 2011, he assumed the role of mayor, an office he held until his appointment as Prime Minister, Minister of State in December 2013.
From January 2013 to November 2015, Xavier Bettel was the chairman of the DP.
Pierre Gramegna
Pierre Gramegna has been Luxembourg’s Minister of Finance from 2013 until 2021.
As Minister of Finance, Mr Gramegna has initiated major reforms to balance the budget and to align Luxembourg’s tax rules with international transparency standards. Thanks to these efforts, the country’s AAA rating has been consistently confirmed by all major rating agencies.
Mr Gramegna is also a promoter of the diversification of Luxembourg’s financial centre, particularly with regard to fintech and sustainable finance. He is the founder and President of the LHoFT Foundation, which runs the Luxembourg House of Financial Technology.
As chair of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council of the European Union during the Luxembourg Presidency, Mr Gramegna actively contributed to reaching agreements on the introduction of the automatic exchange of information on tax rulings with EU member states, as well as on securitisation.
He started his diplomatic career in 1983 when he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1988, he was appointed Political and Economic Affairs Advisor to the Luxembourg Embassy in Paris and became Consul General and Director of the Board of Economic Development in San Francisco, USA, in 1992.
From 1996 to 2002, Mr Gramegna was Luxembourg’s ambassador to Japan and South Korea. He was subsequently responsible for the Directorate of International Economic Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
From 2003 to 2013, he was Director General of the Chamber of Commerce.
Before joining the government, Mr Gramegna was a member of the executive board of several companies, including Cargolux Airlines International (as chairman from 2004 to 2008), the Luxembourg Stock Exchange, LuxExpo Luxembourg and BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg. He has also been a member of numerous advisory committees, including the Advisory Committee on Foreign Trade, the Economic Development Committee and the National Committee for the Promotion of Entrepreneurship.
Debora Revoltella
Debora Revoltella is Director of the Economics Department of the European Investment Bank, acting as Chief Economist.
The Economics Department provides impact-driven economic analysis to support EIB operations and global positioning as well as the Group’s policy and strategy definition. The Department comprises some 40 economists. It is in charge of the sovereign and financial sector rating models for the EIB as well as of providing financial sector expertise in EIB projects. It is also responsible for assessing the impact of EIB activities and the results generated by EIB-financed projects.
Since her arrival at the EIB in 2011, Debora Revoltella has designed and led the work for flagship publications such as the EIB Investment Report, a series of policy working papers and other region- specific research.
She launched the idea and led the process for the design and implementation of the EIB Investment Survey, a new survey covering 12 500 European firms which has become a unique asset in terms of understanding investment dynamics in Europe. She was behind the EIB partnering with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the World Bank for the Enterprise Survey for the MENA region in 2015 and for the whole neighbouring region in 2017.
Debora Revoltella holds a degree in Economics and a Master’s degree in Economics from Bocconi University as well as a PhD in Economics from the University of Ancona in Italy. After her experience as an Adjunct Professor in Macroeconomics at Bocconi University, Debora joined the research department of Banca Commerciale Italiana, a leading Italian Bank.
In 2001, she joined UniCredit as the Chief Economist for Central and Eastern Europe. She managed a team of 40 economists in charge of supporting the institution in its regional growth strategy. During these years, the department developed into a leading research centre for the region.
Debora Revoltella is member of the Steering Committees of the Vienna Initiative and the CompNet, an alternate member of the Board of the Joint Vienna Institute and a member of the Boards of the SUERF and the Euro 50 Group.
Guy Wagner
Originally from a family of entrepreneurs in Luxembourg and with a degree in Economics from the Université Libre of Brussels, Guy joined Banque de Luxembourg in 1986, where he was successively responsible for the Financial Analysis and Asset Management departments, then became Managing Director of BLI – Banque de Luxembourg Investments, an asset management company newly created in 2005.
From July 2022 on, he devotes himself exclusively to his role as Chief Investment Officer, to the management of the portfolios and to the management of the team in charge management of the various funds.
Lionel De Broux
Belgian citizen, Lionel De Broux holds a degree in Economics and a post graduate degree in Financial Economics from the UC Louvain. He was appointed Group Chief Investment Officer in July 2022, after occupying several positions within the investment office of Banque Internationale à Luxembourg which he joined in 2014.
Lionel De Broux started his career in 2001 as a Portfolio Manager at ING Luxembourg, before becoming Head of the Third Party Funds Research and Multi Management team.
Gary Kazantsev
Gary is the Head of Quant Technology Strategy in the Office of the CTO at Bloomberg. Prior to taking on this role, he created and headed the company’s Machine Learning Engineering group, leading projects at the intersection of computational linguistics, machine learning and finance, such as sentiment analysis of financial news, market impact indicators, statistical text classification, social media analytics, question answering, and predictive modeling of financial markets.
Prior to joining Bloomberg in 2007, Gary had earned degrees with distinction in physics, mathematics, and computer science from Boston University.
He is engaged in advisory roles with FinTech and Machine Learning startups and has worked at a variety of technology and academic organizations over the last 20 years. In addition to speaking regularly at industry and academic events around the globe, he is a member of the KDD Data Science + Journalism workshop program committee and the advisory board for the AI & Data Science in Trading conference series. He is also an adjunct professor at Columbia University, and a co-organizer of the annual Machine Learning in Finance conference at Columbia University.
Marie Lassegnore
Marie Lassegnore joined Crédit Mutuel CIC AM in 2012. In 2013, she joined Aberdeen Asset Management (London) as a bond analyst before becoming a portfolio analyst (global credit); developing low carbon strategies and becoming a research expert on Green bonds and SLBs. Marie joined La Française (2018) as Credit Portfolio Manager and was promoted to her current position in 2022.
Marie holds a degree in applied mathematics (Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne) and a master’s in management (EM Lyon Business School).
Roger Havenith
Roger Havenith is Deputy Chief Executive of the EIF since 1 January 2016.
The Chief Executive and the Deputy Chief Executive form the executive management of the EIF responsible for the EIF’s strategy and its day-to-day management. They jointly submit requests for approval to the EIF Board of Directors.
In his role as Deputy Chief Executive, Roger is supervising the risk management, compliance, financial control and middle/back-office services of EIF, ensuring the smooth running of processes that enable EIF to carry out its business.
He acts as main senior counterpart for the EU institutions, notably European Commission, Parliament and Court of Auditors. In this function, he also represents EIF in the discussions with EIB and EC on the next EU Multi-Annual Financial Framework and in the preparation of the next generation of financial instruments addressing EU policy priorities.
Previously, he was heading the EC’s DG ECFIN Unit L2 on financing of innovation, competitiveness and employment policies for more than five years. His long-standing professional career with the EC – which he joined in 1990 – includes several key roles: among others, he was a Commission negotiator and member of the EC team in charge of the European Fund for Strategic Investments (EFSI) SME Window, as part of the Investment Plan for Europe. For several years he also led the EC’s Designated Service responsible for the negotiation, implementation and oversight of financial instruments under CIP, EPMF, MAP and other initiatives.
Roger Havenith has a B.A. in Business Administration from HEC St. Louis in Brussels (Belgium) and LL.M. in International and Comparative Law from Vrije Universiteit Brussel. He also earned a postgraduate degree in European Studies from Institut d’Etudes européennes de l’Université Libre de Bruxelles and M.A. from Licencié-Interprète, Institut supérieur de Traducteurs et Interprètes.
Xavier Hannaerts
Xavier Hannaerts is Head of Investments & Conducting Officer at Spuerkeess Asset Management. Over his 20-year career, Xavier was involved in financial markets in general, among private banking institutions in particular, and held senior positions in investment solutions research & asset management. Global Asset Allocation & Research, Fund Management & Institutional Portfolio Management fall within his area of responsibility. Prior to joining Spuerkeess Asset Management, Xavier was Group Head of Fund selection and Multimanagement & Senior Fund Manager at Quintet Private Bank (formerly known as KBL European Private Bankers). Xavier holds a degree of Commercial Engineering from the Louvain School of Management in Belgium.
Marco Paolucci
Marco Paolucci, since March 2022, is the Head of Investments of Fideuram Bank Luxembourg, the bank of the Intesa San Paolo Group focused on Wealth Management services for Italian and international clients.
As part of his professional duties, Marco holdd the role of manager of delegated portfolios and advisory for customized strategies.
He also holds the role of Chairman of the Investment Committee and Head of Marketing.
From 2015 to February 2022 Marco has worked for Indosuez Wealth management, the private bank of Credit Agricole Group as:

Meredith Annex
Meredith is the Head of Heating and Hydrogen at BloombergNEF, a leading market research provider. The team focuses on the economics, investments, strategies and developments in clean hydrogen worldwide. Recent outputs include the 2H 2022 Hydrogen Market Outlook, analysis of the RePowerEU proposal’s impact on hydrogen and an assessment on the economics of blue versus green hydrogen. Meredith has over a decade experience in the energy industry spanning power, business strategy, natural gas, carbon and solar. She holds a MSc in Environmental Economics and Climate Change from the London School of Economics and a BA in Economics from Williams College in Massachusetts, including an exchange at the University of Oxford.
Andrea Mosconi
Andrea Mosconi is Global Head of Listed Core Services at Bloomberg — the world’s most trusted source for connecting decision-makers to a dynamic network of real-time and historical financial data, news, research and analytics. Based in London, Mr. Mosconi oversees business and product development of the Bloomberg Terminal and Data. His expertise covers equity, funds, derivatives, structured products, company financials and research.
Mr. Mosconi joined Bloomberg in 2009 as an Equity Derivatives and Structured Products Specialist and was responsible for its derivatives product development. In 2012, he became Head of Sales for Southern Europe – covering Spain, France, Italy and Portugal. From 2015 he ran the sales group for ASEAN out of Singapore, before taking up as Head of Sales for EMEA in 2018. In 2021 he moved to the Product, Data and Engineering Department in Bloomberg to run the Listed Core Services business.
Prior to joining Bloomberg, Mr. Mosconi was the Head of Structured and Equity Exotic Options desk at Abaxbank. He started his career as an Equity Derivatives Trader with Unicredit.
Mr. Mosconi graduated from the Università Commerciale ‘Luigi Bocconi’ with a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematical and Financial Economics.
