Bloomberg, Cornell Tech, and Tech:NYC invite you to join us for the latest installment of the Cornell Tech @ Bloomberg series, featuring Shaun Stewart, CEO of New Lab, in conversation with Scarlet Fu of Bloomberg Television.

After having started his career in hospitality, including roles as CEO of TripAdvisor’s Jetsetter and head of Airbnb’s vacation rentals business, Stewart joined Google X in 2016 as director of its self-driving car project. Later that year, the group spun out of Google X as Waymo. Late last year, it launched a driverless taxi service in Arizona called Waymo One.

Stewart joined New Lab in December 2018 and relocated from California to New York City. Launched in 2016 with support from both the state and City of New York, New Lab is located in an 84,000-square-foot building in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, where parts for World War II battleships were once made. After having fallen into disrepair, real estate developer David Belt and entrepreneur Scott Cohen hatched a plan in 2011 to return manufacturing and innovation to the facility.

Envisioned as a place where manufacturing and hardware startups could prototype, build, work, and grow, New Lab now houses over 100 member companies, whose areas of focus range from artificial intelligence and robotics to augmented reality and nanotechnology. These member companies have collectively raised nearly half a billion dollars in venture capital funding.
