Overview

Bloomberg, Cornell Tech, and Tech:NYC invite you to join us for the latest installment of the Cornell Tech @ Bloomberg Speaker Series, featuring Zach Weinberg, Co-founder, President, and COO of Flatiron Health, in conversation with Scarlet Fu of Bloomberg Television.

Zach Weinberg and Nat Turner founded Flatiron Health in 2012 when they were 24 and had already started and exited two companies together. Traditionally, clinical trials and the patients who participate in them have been the only way to advance medical treatments. And yet, patients are being treated all the time in clinical settings outside of trials, producing outcomes and results that could guide future research and treatments.

Weinberg and Turner identified the opportunity to use technology to unlock the data and insights from patients’ health records for the specific purpose of advancing cancer treatment and research. By making software for hospitals to use, Flatiron got access to the data generated by its software, which it could then aggregate and analyze.

Roche acquired Flatiron in 2018 for $2.1 billion to accelerate industry-wide development and delivery of breakthrough medicines for cancer patients. The company continues to function independently and its shared technology platform now connects oncologists, academics, hospitals, life science researchers, and regulators. Its data helps inform everything from the design of clinical research to federal regulations.

We hope you’ll join us for this conversation, in which Weinberg and Fu will discuss Weinberg’s transition from food delivery and ad tech startups to one in healthcare, the long path to landing Flatiron’s first customer, the ways in which Roche and Flatiron can accelerate each other’s growth, how Flatiron’s data may lead to better patient outcomes, and how we might all contribute to the advancement of medicine.
