Sustainable aviation fuel – or SAF – is one of the key levers for the decarbonisation of the global air transport sector. The nascent SAF industry continues to show promise, with the number of offtake agreements rising in the past two years as airlines demonstrate their commitment to the fuel and new projects boost production capacity. But hurdles remain, namely scarcity of supply, competition for resources, and a lack significant capital flow towards projects. This event will explain the challenges and next steps to financing the scale-up of SAF, as well as the potential rewards.

Panel: challenges and opportunities to SAF scale-up
- 14:30 – 15:30
Environmental regulations and fiscal policies have already affected the SAF market in Europe, North America and elsewhere. The industry has been growing and the production project pipeline implies a tenfold increase in SAF capacity by 2030.
However, as new announced projects look more like small startups than big oil, financing is more important than ever. All eyes are on long-term offtakes, and take-or-pay guarantees, but are airlines in a place to commit? Can traditional project financing models adapt, and what needs to turn proposed projects into production.
This panel will discuss the challenges and opportunities investing in SAF and what is needed to grow the industry to the level required to meet emissions reduction targets.
Moderated by Nikolas Soulopoulos, Head of Commercial Transport, BloombergNEF
Julien Manhes, Head of Sustainable Aviation Fuels and CDR, Airbus
